

Where the Wild Things Are, the Airtight Garage, and The Way Things Work, are all family oriented mini-theme parks that offer "lite" fun in surprisingly informative ways. The interactive attractions are an odd but unique combination. And the obligatory merchandise is available in abundance, with Crash and Spyro stuffed dolls, and a wide variety of t-shirts, carry bags, and watches lining the store walls. Instead of retail clerks, the store has hired "Gametenders" to explain content, compatibility, prices and release dates. Gamers can try single player and multiplayer games, some even set up with multitaps for four-player bouts. For example, for those who like to play before buying, 30 game stations are set up throughout the store. Display innovation and customer attention are the store's central goals. The key to the store will be experimentation. The store is a clean, high-end place with lots of personal help and plenty of titles from which to choose. Sony makes games, and its publishes games, so why shouldn't it sell them, too? Cross-breeding ideas from music and clothing stores with PlayStation products, Sony's innovative store highlights exotic, undulating game shelves, a retail bar (instead of a counter), and plenty of playable, single and multiplayer games. The PlayStation Store The PlayStation Store is Sony's way of getting into the retail end of its products. Sendak was on hand with entourage, to see the opening of Where the Wild Things Are and strolled about, admiring the transformation of his 20-plus year old books into a fully interactive mini-park and restaurant. One of the highlights of the event, as least for IGNPSX, was the appearance of artist and storyteller Maurice Sendak, who wrote Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night's Kitchen. A few executives from the upper echelons of Sony's top ranks also appeared to bless the Metreon's launch.

The Opening Event At the Grand Opening on Tuesday, the superbly catered event featured several live bands, an introduction from Mayor Willy Brown, free drinks, and cash-free entry into each of the high-end stores and restaurants. With the shape of a giant arc or curvaceous freighter, the behemoth Metreon brings in a different kind of attraction for tourists and families alike. The 350,000 square-foot entertainment center, located in the Yerba Buena Gardens in downtown San Francisco, CA, is the first of its kind, and boasts a stylish new PlayStation retail shop, 15 theatres, an IMAX theater, eight restaurants, and a new hybrid of interactive entertainment that's sure to please most consumers.
